Alarm warning over fire exercise in Telford

  • 7-30-2010

_48552181_mockfire304.jpgOne in five smoke detectors checked after house fires was not working, Shropshire's fire service says.

The figures were revealed as the service staged a mock fire in a semi-detached house in Donnington, Telford.

Using actors, it aimed to show how quickly smoke spreads at the empty Wrekin Housing Trust property.

About 67% of homes where fires occur in Shropshire have a smoke alarm, but the number of non-working detectors increased last year from 12% to 20%.

Firefighters and ambulance staff arrived at the scene as smoke billowed out of windows during Thursday evening's initiative.

Other organisations involved included police and Telford & Wrekin Council.

Organiser Ian Leigh, from Wellington fire station, said: "People are unaware that you are more than twice as likely to die in an accidental house fire if you don't have a working smoke alarm."
