Woman charged over fire at block of flats in Kingston

  • 8-6-2010

_48641984_kingstonfire_afp.jpgA woman has been charged with two counts of arson after a fire in a block of flats in south-west London.

Liya Bushman, 32, is accused of recklessly endangering life and intending to endanger life at the 15-storey building on the Cambridge Road Estate in Kingston upon Thames.

The fire spread quickly through the top four floors and the roof on 12 July.

Nobody was injured in the blaze, which took 100 firefighters about four hours to bring under control.

One resident told at the time how she had to kick down her door to rescue her baby.

Others said they were forced to use the lift to escape, even though it was dangerous, because of the speed at which the fire spread.

Up to 150 people live in 60 flats in the block, which is called Madingley.

Four other buildings nearby had to be evacuated as a precaution.

Ms Bushman, from St Peter's Road, Kingston upon Thames, will appear at the town's Crown Court on 18 October.
