Petrol was poured through the letterbox of the house on Haywood Avenue, Marsh, and set alight

A previously-unseen image showing the charred wreckage of a bedroom where a seven-year-old boy died 13 years ago has been released by police.

Joe McCafferty died after petrol was poured through the letterbox of a house in Huddersfield in May 1997.

West Yorkshire Police released the photo to coincide with a fresh appeal for information on Saturday, which would have been Joe's 21st birthday.

In a direct appeal to the person responsible, Det Supt Dave Pervin said: "Sadly though, I think that you are a very weak person and too much of a coward to admit to what you have done.

"You went to that house and in the shadows of darkness, poured petrol through the letterbox.

"In doing so you took away the life of an innocent and loving young boy.

"If you have one shred of decency or compassion in you, you should come out from your hiding place and give yourself up. It is time now to face your own demons."

The Crimestoppers charity is offering a £5,000 reward for information that could help to find Joe's killer.

An appeal on the BBC's Crimewatch programme last month led to new lines of inquiry for officers, but no arrests have been made.

Mr Pervin added: "Knowing that Joe should be marking his 21st birthday this weekend, that he could be a university graduate, making his own way in life, maybe married and looking to have a family of his own, only makes me more determined than ever to find his faceless and callous killer."
