Dog owner escapes plunge into Kilmardinny Loch

  • 12-1-2010

A dog walker has survived a fall into an iced loch in East Dunbartonshire.

The emergency arose after a dog walked onto Kilmardinny Loch in Bearsden and fell through the ice, to be followed seconds later by his owner.

A male passer-by was able to pull the man and animal to safety using a broken tree branch.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service said the incident should serve as a warning to pet owners to keep their animals on a leash near iced water.

The brigade said that they received a call about the emergency at about 1530 GMT but by the time they arrived the man and his dog had been rescued and left the scene.

Witnesses told firefighters that the dog had walked onto the loch and fallen through the ice.

The dog's owner then followed the dog onto the ice, also fell through and became extremely distressed and shouted for help.

Assistant chief officer Dave Goodhew, said: "This incident should be a warning to all dog owners to keep their pets on a leash when they go near iced-over water.

"Strathclyde Fire and Rescue will, of course, go to the rescue of people who are in difficulty in water but we shall not risk human life to rescue animals.

"We shall only attempt to rescue animals from the shore if we are able to get boats to the scene."
