Droitwich toddler alerts mother to fire

  • 1-31-2011

A three-year-old girl who alerted her mother to a fire next to her house has been praised by firefighters.

Megan Key was playing with her toys in the living room of her family's home in Droitwich on Friday when she spotted flames coming from a garden shed.

She told her mother who was able to get them both out of the house while they waited for the fire brigade.

Susan Key said: "It's just amazing. I'm so proud of her."

She said she had been in the kitchen when Megan said there was a "strange noise" in the conservatory.

Mrs Key said: "She was pointing at the conservatory door. I looked out of the door and saw seven-foot high flames coming towards the side of our house.

"I was petrified, my initial reaction was 'get Megan out'."

A spokesman from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said the fire could have had far more "serious consequences" without an early alert from Megan.

Watch Commander Craig Newman said: "Thanks to this little girl, we were at the scene very quickly and the fire was under control within around 20 minutes.

"The shed was completely destroyed and there was also damage to both houses either side of it.

"We really feel that this fire had the potential to be far more serious than it was, especially as there was a gas cylinder nearby which could easily have caught fire and exploded.

"The family can be very proud of their young daughter."
