Woman jailed for Nairn harbour boats fire

  • 3-31-2011

An 18-year-old woman has been jailed for 16 months for a fire that destroyed four boats in a Highlands harbour.

Dawn MacRae, 18, of Inverness, was 17 when she attempted to steal a vessel from the town's harbour.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that when she was unsuccessful in starting the boat she set fire to a cushion using a cigarette lighter.

The flames took hold and spread to the other vessels in the early hours of 29 July last year.

Her solicitor Craig Wood said MacRae had suffered from depression and had not come to terms with sexual assaults when she was younger.

The court heard that she would take out her aggression on inanimate objects.

Mr Wood added: "Ordinarily she would be here in respect of one boat, but with pure bad luck she is facing a charge with four boats."

The solicitor asked Sheriff Ian Abercrombie to impose probation and community service so she could get support for her problems.

But the judge said he had no alternative but to sentence MacRae to prison.
