Cordon set up after building fire in Tamworth

  • 4-6-2011

Residents had to leave their homes due to a fire at a disused building in Staffordshire.

A 200m police cordon was in place and it was believed the site on Hockley Road in Tamworth contained cylinders of oxyacetylene.

Fire crews were called to the disused cold storage site at 1720 BST on Wednesday.

A cordon was later reduced to 50m, but the fire was still not under control at 2155 BST, the fire service said.

At the height of the blaze, three fire engines were at the scene but only one was expected to remain there overnight.

Several roads are expected to remain closed until Thursday evening.

Residents in Hockley Road, Overwood Road, Bailey Road, Beauchamp Road, Peel Drive, Palmerston Avenue, part of Hedging Lane, and a small area of Arden Road have had to leave their homes.

Residents from Hawthorne House were also moved as a precaution.

A community centre is being used to house residents and a mobile police station has been set up.
