Cylinders explode in Grimsby arson attack

  • 4-30-2011

An arson attack on a warehouse in North East Lincolnshire left firefighters dealing with exploding gas cylinders and burning plastic.

Fire and Rescue crews called to the pipe works and engineering factory on Murray Road in Grimsby found the blaze had spread to a second building.

The fire was so intense that crews had to siphon water from a nearby dock to bolster water supplies late on Friday.

Fire service officials said the fire had been started deliberately.

Pete Baron, from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The fire developed extremely quickly generating very intense heat which meant that fire crews had to tackle the fire from outside at first.

"They worked extremely hard to get the fire under sufficient control to allow them to enter the building and get to the heart of the fire.

"When gas cylinders are involved in fire it is always a concern but the firefighters did very well to remove them to safety preventing a possible escalation of the incident."
