Medway suspected arson attacks may be linked

  • 8-31-2011

Police believe a fire at a derelict house in Kent may be linked to a series of suspicious blazes in the area.

A total of 15 firefighters were needed to put out the blaze in Vicarage Road, Strood just after 23:00 GMT on Tuesday.

The cause of the fire, on the first floor of the property, is being investigated by police.

Three other fires in the Medway area at the weekend are being treated as suspicious. There were no injuries in any of the incidents.

The first, in a disused restaurant in Rochester High Street, took place at 22:20 BST on Saturday.

Firefighters called in police to investigate two more fires on Sunday.

The first, at flats on Fort Pitt Street, Chatham, happened at 12:38 BST and the second at 22:30 BST in the derelict Market Cafe in Corporation Street, Rochester.

Det Sgt Richard Spicer said officers were following a number of lines of inquiry into the weekend incidents.

"At this stage we are unable to confirm whether or not the fires are linked as this will form part of our investigation," he said.

Anyone who has information which might help the investigation is being asked to come forward.
