Warwickshire fire stations: Brinklow closure is marked

  • 8-31-2011

Residents in Brinklow have marked the closure of their fire station which stopped operating on Wednesday.

A brass band played to people gathered at the station, in the village between Coventry and Rugby.

The station is one of three that will close. Warwick also closed on Wednesday and Studley will close at a later date.

Warwickshire's chief fire officer, Graeme Smith, said the closures were necessary to balance county resources without additional funding.

He said: "My main job is to keep Warwickshire residents safe in whatever ways I can. There's no new money so I've got to redeploy money as I think best suits the whole of Warwickshire."

'A sad occasion'

The closure of the three stations will result in the loss of at least six retained firefighter posts.

Steve Friswell, farmer and a retained firefighter at Brinklow station for 35 years, said: "I think it's a shame. There's a lot of local knowledge of rural community and agriculture and there's not so much of that in the whole time [non-retained] brigade."

Roger Pearson, chairman of Brinklow Parish Council, said: "It's a very sad occasion. This isn't just a job for them [the firefighters]. You see examples here of people with 35 years service. It's a very sad night for them and for the village."

The authority approved plans in July 2010 to close Brinklow, Studley and Warwick fire stations. Brinklow and Warwick close on 31 August, but no date has been set yet for the closure of Studley.
