Reservoir crash: Man charged over Llanidloes deaths

  • 10-31-2011

A man has been been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a car plunged into a reservoir in Powys, killing four people.

Emyr Griffith, 66, Phyllis Hooper, 84, Peter Briscombe and Liam Govier, both 14, from Pontypridd, died in Llyn Clywedog near Llanidloes, in April.

Denise Griffith, 55, was driving the family car but survived the crash.

Gordon Dyche, 24, from Llanbrynmair, who was in another vehicle, will appear in court next month.

The Griffith family had been on an Easter holiday in the Machynlleth area. Mrs Griffith lost her husband, mother and two foster sons in the crash on 20 April.

She was at the wheel of a Peugeot 807 when it went through a fence and into the water at the Bwlch y Gle Dam at the end of the reservoir.

Rescue operation

Although Mrs Griffiths managed to swim to the edge of the reservoir and escaped with minor injuries, the other family members could not be saved after the crash on the B4518.

Two fire crews and boats from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service were involved in a rescue operation, and RAF Valley on Anglesey sent a Sea King helicopter search and rescue crew.

A police helicopter was also involved.

Mr Dyche, a mechanic, will appear before Welshpool magistrates on 22 November.
