Gloucestershire toddler rescued from burning car

  • 11-18-2011

An arson investigation has been launched after a toddler was rescued from a burning car in Gloucestershire.

Police said the 18 month old boy was temporarily left in the car on the driveway at his Willersley home while his mother took two children inside.

When she returned a few moments later, part of the car was on fire with the boy inside.

The family managed to extinguish the blaze and the child was unharmed.

It happened at about 20:00 GMT on Thursday.

'Incredibly distressing'

Gloucestershire Police said a man was seen running away from the scene in Badsey Road around the time of the fire.

He got into the passenger seat of a white car or van and the male driver drove away, the spokesman said.

Det Ch Insp Richard Cooper, from Gloucestershire Police, said: "This was an incredibly distressing incident for the family and we are all thankful that the child got out with no injuries at all.

"There's a strong possibility that whoever started the fire did not realise the child was still in the vehicle but we are doing all we can to find out who is responsible."

He asked anyone with information to contact the force.
