Bird of prey rescued from mine shaft in Gloucestershire

  • 11-23-2011

A bird of prey that was trapped down a disused mine shaft in the Forest of Dean has been rescued by firefighters.

Rope rescue teams from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service abseiled down the shaft at Brockhollands Wood in Bream to reach the buzzard.

Once freed, the bird was found to have an injured wing which prevented it flying out of the 10m deep shaft.

A Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "Fortunately this story has a happy ending."

He added: "Our specialist teams are trained for situations just like this and I am pleased that we've been able to put our training to the test with such a positive outcome."

The bird has been taken to Vale Wildlife Centre in Evesham by RSPCA officers where it is hoped it will make a full recovery.
