Baby rescued from house fire by PCSO in Preston

  • 6-8-2012

An eight-month-old baby girl was rescued from a burning house by a police community support officer called to the scene in Preston.

Stuart Garnett went to the house on Nimes Street after he heard reports of the fire on Thursday morning.

He saw a woman and her baby daughter trapped by the fire at an upstairs window, and used a neighbour's ladder to bring the child to safety.

The woman was rescued by firefighters who arrived soon afterwards.

The mother and baby were treated by paramedics at the scene and transferred to hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

'Scariest experience'

Ch Insp Jameel Murtza said PCSO Garnett's actions were "truly heroic".

He said: "He thought on his feet and put his well-being on the line to save a young infant and help a mum get to safety.

"Everyone at the constabulary is proud of his actions and I am sure Preston is as well."

PCSO Garnett said: "It was quite a scene mother and her baby desperate to get out of a burning home.

"In fact it was one of the scariest experiences of my career which is nearly a decade old. I am just so glad I could help and get the child out of there and into the hands of the paramedics."
