  • 6-15-2012

Two men accused of murdering three members of the same family by setting fire to their home in Helensburgh have made a second appearance in court.

Thomas Sharkey, 21, and his eight-year-old sister Bridget died in the fire in July 2011. Their father Thomas Snr, 55, died days later. Their mother survived.

Robert Jennings, 49, and a 36-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, are charged with murder.

They made no plea or declaration and were returned to custody.

The two accused appeared on petition at Dumbarton Sheriff Court.

It is alleged they wilfully set fire to the Sharkey's family home in Scott Court, Helensburgh, and as a result the siblings died at the scene and their father died of his injuries six days later in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

The pair are also accused of wilfully setting another six fires in Helensburgh, Rhu and Loch Lomond, between 2008 and 2011.

They are also accused of attempting to wilfully set a fire at the Station Bar in Helensburgh, on 3 January 2010.

The man who cannot be named for legal reasons is also charged with committing a breach of the peace in the Teak and Ash public house in Helensburgh, on 11 July 2010 by smashing glasses and threatening to set fire to the premises.

He is also accused of throwing ammonia or a similar substance onto the face of Michael McGinley at the Argyll Bar, Helensburgh, on 5 January 2011.

The 36-year-old also faces a charge of assaulting Richard McKinney, by repeatedly slashing him on the face to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement at Alexandria, on 20 January 2010.
