John MacDonald jailed for 13 years for Elgin fire murder bids

  • 7-30-2012

A man found guilty of trying to murder five people in a house fire in Moray has been jailed for 13 years.

John MacDonald, 43, threw a bottle of petrol or other flammable liquid through a window at a home in Kingsmills, Elgin, in December.

His former girlfriend and her new partner were among those inside.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, judge Lord Stewart told MacDonald: "I judge the only proper sentence is a long period of imprisonment."

He added: "You continue to deny responsibility and in keeping with that position you have exhibited no remorse."

Alistair Brooks, Anne Roate, Daniel Doherty, Lisa Sharp and George Lindsay were injured in the fire.

Mr Brooks suffered burns to a quarter of his body and is still receiving treatment following the attack.

'Commend courage'

Lord Stewart said a jury had earlier accepted the lives of all those in the flat at the time of the fire-bombing were endangered.

Grampian Police Det Insp Stewart Mackie, who led the enquiry, said: "Throughout our investigation into this shocking incident, Mr MacDonald has shown no remorse for his actions, the consequences of which were potentially fatal.

"I would like to commend those who were the victims of this attack for their courage, and also thank the wider community of Elgin for their invaluable support in coming forward and helping us bring this matter before the court."
