House arson in Leek 'put firefighters at risk'

  • 8-31-2012

Arsonists who set an empty house alight put firefighters' lives at risk, the fire service has said.

Twenty-five firefighters tackled the blaze at the empty house in Junction Road, Leek, Staffordshire, overnight.

Leek station manager Carl Mason said the arson was a "dangerous act" and the severity of the fire put crews at risk.

"When firefighters were able to go into the building they had to contend with loose stairs and flooring as well as the fire itself," he said.

"The first floor has been destroyed by fire, heat and smoke and there is smoke logging throughout the ground floor of the property."

Crews attended the incident about 00:30 BST and some staff remained at the scene until 03:45 BST.

The empty house had been for sale. A fire and police investigation found the fire had been started deliberately.

Anyone with information about the incident was urged to contact Staffordshire Police.
