Sneinton roof fire school could have been lost in blaze

  • 8-31-2012

Fire crews say swift action prevented a Nottingham school from being completely destroyed after a fire in the building's roof.

Station manager Andy Lindley said hot materials used by contractors at Sneinton Church of England Primary School on Thursday had caused a "wind-assisted" blaze.

He said six fire engines attended the scene on Windmill Lane after 12:00 BST.

An investigation is under way to pinpoint where the fire started.

Mr Lindley said: "We had to break into the roof from the classrooms underneath as well as through the roof from above.

"If we were short of resources we could potentially have lost the school", he added.

He said the emergency planning team had been talking to the school about when it could reopen.

A spokesperson for Nottingham City Council said: "The extent of the damage is not fully known yet so it is too early to say if the school will reopen on Wednesday."
