Hackney hostel fire: Second man dies

  • 9-7-2012

A second Polish man has died following a fire at a disused Salvation Army hostel in Hackney, east London.

Lukas Gorkowski, 31, died on Friday morning in hospital, where he had been in a critical condition with burns and injuries since the fire on 4 August.

He had jumped 25ft (8m) from a window to escape the blaze on Lower Clapton Road. Krzysztof Waleczek, 32, died of smoke inhalation during the fire.

A 37-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson.

He is due to answer bail in early October.

Police said both deceased men were of no fixed address.

Mr Gorkowski died at the Royal London Hospital in the early hours of Friday.

An inquest into the death of Mr Waleczek was opened and adjourned on 9 August at Poplar Coroner's Court.

His cause of death was given as smoke inhalation after a post-mortem examination at Poplar mortuary the previous day.

About 40 firefighters had been called to the building which also saw a man and a woman rescued from the roof of a porch. Both were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and were later discharged.

Another man escaped uninjured.
