Fire crews remain at flood-hit A34 near Stone

  • 12-21-2012

Fire crews remain at a flooded Staffordshire road a day after being called to the scene.

Firefighters were called to the A34 near Stone at 10:20 GMT on Thursday and rescued a driver trapped in floodwater. The road was shut overnight.

The northbound carriageway is now open and one lane of the southbound road is set to reopen.

Two high volume pumps are at the scene and crews were "likely to be there all day", a service spokeswoman said.

On Thursday, 30 children and staff were evacuated from the nearby Meaford Day nursery because of flooding on Meaford Road, near the A34 junction.

Adele Cheadle from the nursery said: "It's a regular problem with the canal up the road, it keeps overflowing.

"The water was up over the top of car wheels, and it comes at such a force down the road, it's dangerous."

There are no flood warnings in place for Staffordshire, but there are a number of flood alerts, including for low-lying land and roads between Hopwas and the National Arboretum near Alrewas.

Friday's meeting at Uttoxeter racetrack has been abandoned due to a waterlogged track.
