West Brompton roof collapse 'caused by explosion'

  • 4-28-2013

An explosion is thought to have caused a roof to collapse in London, affecting three terraced houses, fire crews have said.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the properties in Fernshaw Road, West Brompton, and those on either side were evacuated as a precaution.

A spokesman said there were no reports of injuries.

The borough's dangerous structural engineer was called in to assess the roof.

LFB received the call out at 11:45 BST, and sent an aerial ladder, four fire rescue units and a hydraulic platform to the scene.

A spokesman said: "It looks like some form of explosion has taken place but we are not in a position to say what that is at the moment."

He said a section of ornate parapet had fallen from the property on to the pavement and the garden below.

At 18:00 a spokesman for Kensington and Chelsea Council said contractors had worked to move debris and secure masonry.

He said the cause of the collapse was still unknown but it was not gas or a bomb.

Most residents who were evacuated have been allowed back to their homes and those who have not been have made their own arrangements.

The road should be reopened on Sunday.
