Three rescued after flats blaze in Maryhill, Glasgow

  • 5-4-2013

Three people have been rescued by firefighters after a blaze tore through part of a block of flats in Glasgow.

Crews arrived at the building in the Maryhill area at about 20:30 on Friday after 999 calls from the public.

They were confronted by a "well-developed" fire in a second-floor communal area. A number of residents were calling for help from the upper floor windows.

A man and two women were led to safety by firefighters.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the man and one woman were rescued using a ladder. They were suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation and were attended to by paramedics at the scene.

Firefighters using breathing equipment also entered the building and helped the second woman to safety.

Flammable items

Two casualties were later taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

The fire service has warned residents about the dangers of storing flammable items in communal areas.

A spokesman said: "The quick thinking actions of our fire crews have resulted in three rescues and prevented any serious injuries from occurring.

"But this incident had the potential to cause real harm.

"Whilst it is too early to say what caused this fire, we would ask all people resident in flats with communal areas to refrain from using these areas for the storage of combustible items such as old furniture or electrical items.

He added: "Actions such as this increase the potential for a serious fire to occur and put all residents at risk."
