Man praised after boy rescued from railings in Bolton

  • 6-21-2013

A man has been praised for supporting the weight of a boy who had impaled himself by the wrist on a set of railings in Bolton.

The 11-year-old was stuck by the wrist for 30 minutes on railings at Park Lane, Little Lever.

The man, who has not been named, stood on a chair to support the boy's weight as paramedics treated him and firefighters later worked to free him.

Watch Manager John Duffin said the man had "lessened the boy's ordeal".

He said: "The boy was initially left hanging from the top by his wrist and was obviously in great pain and distress.

"When we arrived the man was standing on the chair supporting the boy, offering him reassurance and calming him down while the paramedics tended to him.

"Throughout our efforts to free the boy, the neighbour never let go of him and supported his weight continually, which must have taken considerable effort as the boy was well off the ground."

Fire crews used cutting gear to dismantle the railing the boy was caught on. He was later treated in hospital following his ordeal on Wednesday.
