Southbourne flat fire rescue: Man arrested

  • 6-30-2013

A man has been arrested after allegedly refusing to leave a burning flat and attempting to attack police with knives as they tried to rescue him.

Officers used a Taser stun gun on the man before saving him from the fire in Southbourne, Dorset, on Saturday evening.

The man was later treated in hospital for the effects of smoke inhalation.

A man is now being held in custody on suspicion of arson and attempting to assault police and fire officers.

Firefighters from Dorset Fire and Rescue Service were threatened when they arrived at the flat on Oxford Avenue, said police.

A man had barricaded himself inside the property and was refusing to leave.

'Baton round'

Police evacuated other residents from the building.

Armed officers forced entry to the flat after negotiations with the man failed.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: "Upon entering the flat they were attacked by a white male in his 40s armed with two large knives.

"Officers responded by deploying Taser and a baton round which enabled them to subdue the male and safely remove him from the burning building allowing Dorset Fire and Rescue Service to extinguish the fire."
