Fire damages Liskeard Homebase store

  • 9-30-2013

Firefighters have spend the night tackling a blaze at a DIY store in Cornwall.

The fire at Homebase in Plymouth Road, Liskeard, broke out just after midnight and destroyed about 30% of the store's stock, although the building itself was not badly damaged.

At its height about 80 firefighters from across the county were involved in the incident, but no-one was hurt.

Crews cut through shuttered metal doors and emergency exits to gain access.

An investigation into the cause has started.

Flammable products

Steve Brown, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service's manager, said the fire had posed particular risks to crews because of the presence of potentially flammable products.

"The particular area where we think the fire may have started - although the investigation is ongoing at this stage - wasn't actually in the paint area, but there are plenty of other flammables," he told BBC News.

Roads around the building were closed for several hours, including a slip road on the main A38 and diversions were put in place by Devon and Cornwall Police and Cornwall highways department.

A Homebase spokesman said the store would remain closed while the damage was assessed.
