Fire at Glasgow kebab shop spreads to flats

  • 11-29-2013

Residents were evacuated after a fire broke out at a takeaway shop in Glasgow city centre and spread to flats above.

About 30 firefighters were called out to tackle the blaze at Diablero Kebab shop on Pitt Street which broke out at about 17:30 on Friday.

A fire service spokesman said the fire had spread to flats in the first floor of the four-storey building.

Seven residents were led to safety. No-one was injured.

Group Manager Freddie Graham, in charge of the incident, said: "The initial fire within the ground and first floor flats was extinguished very quickly from the initial attending fire crews, however the construction of these types of building can give rise to a higher risk of fire spread within hidden voids. We will remain in attendance to ensure we fully satisfied that there is no risk of that."

In a separate incident, seven residents were led to safety and treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a first-floor flat in the Broad Street area of Bridgeton, Glasgow, just before 17:00.

Watch manager Robert Taylor said: "The quick response of the first attending fire crews ensured we got all the residents who were at risk from the fire to a place of safety.

"The members of the public who made the early 999 emergency calls to the service played their part in ensuring we got to the scene as quickly as possible to do this and extinguish the fire causing limited fire damage."

An investigation into the cause of both fires will be carried out.
