Raynes Park fire death: Woman's screams 'not human'

  • 12-31-2013

The screams of a young mother who died after she was found on fire in a street in south-west London did not sound human, according to a witness.

Police and firefighters were called to a level crossing in West Barnes Lane, Raynes Park, at 01:00 GMT on Sunday.

The mother, who has been named locally as Rachel Osei, died from burns and inhalation of fire fumes, a post-mortem test found.

Layla Hamid, who lives nearby, told BBC London she heard the woman's screams.

"It was like nothing I'd ever heard, I didn't think it was a human... it sounded like a fox," she said.

'Great mum'

On Instagram, her brother Justin wrote: "R.I.P To my little sister rachel, i cant believe im having to write this, ive spent so much time thinking about how this could happen because it just doesnt make sense to me.

"You were a great mum and sister i love you and will always miss you rest in peace."

Scotland Yard said the dead woman had a young son who was being looked after by relatives when she died.

A Met Police spokesman said two people who tried to save her life had come forward but they still wanted to trace a third person.

Officers believe the fire started at a residential property in Linkway, a nearby street.

The cause of the fire and the circumstances of her death are being investigated by police and London Fire Brigade.
