Ex-Dorset fire chief David Bryant has jail term increased

  • 4-7-2014

A former Dorset fire officer convicted of a sex attack on a boy of 14 almost 40 years ago has had his jail sentence increased by the Court of Appeal.

David Bryant, 63, of Grove Road East, Christchurch, was convicted in December at Bournemouth Crown Court of a serious sexual offence against the boy.

His six-year prison term has now been raised to eight-and-a-half years.

Bryant's victim said the revelations about Jimmy Savile and his abuse had partly inspired him to report Bryant.

Alongside his original prison sentence, Bryant was also put on the sex offenders' register for life.

'Always on his mind'

Bryant was present in the dock to hear Lord Justice Treacy announce that the court agreed with submissions made on behalf of Solicitor General Oliver Heald that the original sentence imposed was "unduly lenient".

The three judges ruled that six years did not "adequately reflect the aggravating features" of the offence, and it "afforded too much weight to the available mitigation".

The court heard that Bryant, then aged 26, had carried out the attack with another man who was working as a fireman in Christchurch.

They had invited the schoolboy to their fire station to play darts with them. He was attacked on his third visit.

The judge said their victim did not report the crime until 2012, "after being motivated to come forward in the aftermath of the Jimmy Savile affair".

The victim had described how the offence had "deprived" him of 35 years of his life as the events were always on his mind.

Bryant was made an honorary freeman of Christchurch in October 2006 in recognition of his four decades of service. He resigned in June 2013.

He was also previously head of retained fire crew in Christchurch.
