Canning Town fire: Seventy firefighters tackle blaze

More than 400 tonnes of recycled waste caught fire at a warehouse in east London.

About 70 firefighters tackled the blaze, which broke out at an industrial estate in Scarab Close, Canning Town, at 00:30 BST. It is now under control.

The cause of the fire is not known. London Fire Brigade (LFB) had advised residents to stay indoors.

Four contingency crews tackled the fire between 06:00 until 08:00, during Fire Brigades Union strike action.

After the strike, London Fire Brigade tweeted that six fire engines and 30 firefighters took over.

Station manager Paul McClenaghan said: "Crews are working hard to bring the blaze under control and to stop it from spreading to neighbouring buildings on the industrial estate.

"We're making steady progress, but the fire is producing large plumes of smoke which are drifting, so any residents who are affected are advised to keep doors and windows closed."

Firefighters are still at the scene "damping down pockets of fire", LFB said
