Ruptured gas supply alight during fire in Acocks Green

  • 8-17-2014

Firefighters have contained a large blaze at a row of shops in the Acocks Green area of Birmingham.

The fire broke out at a newsagent on Warwick Road at about 21:30 BST on Tuesday, before spreading to two flats above and a shop next door.

At one stage a ruptured gas supply was alight, the fire service's area commander Simon Shilton said.

Crews remained on site until about 18:00 on Wednesday to make sure any hot spots were contained.

Nobody was in any of the buildings at the time, West Midlands Fire Service said.

The brigade is liaising with Birmingham City Council to have the debris and rubble removed.

Six fire engines and a crew of about 30 were at the site at the time of planned industrial action, which was due to start at 22:59 BST.

The firefighters stayed to deal with the burning buildings rather than hand over to a contingency crew.

The Fire Brigades Union is currently in dispute with the government over pensions.
