Man jailed for Buxton fire attack on 'Little John' McLaughlin

  • 8-30-2014

A man who set fire to his friend after dousing him with lighter fluid has been jailed for 14 years.

Jake Grimshaw fled after the attack and threatened to jump from a window, causing large parts of Buxton in Derbyshire to be sealed off.

The victim is still in hospital following the attack in February. He suffered serious burns to his face and body, and damaged his internal organs.

Grimshaw, 23, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

But a jury at Nottingham Crown Court found him not guilty of attempted murder.

The victim, John McLaughlin, is known by many people in Buxton as Little John.

The 37-year-old was attacked in his home in Fairfield Road at about 16:40 GMT on 7 February.

Grimshaw then fled to his home in South Mews, where he threatened to jump from a third floor window.

Police sealed off parts of Buxton while trained negotiators were called to talk him down.

Grimshaw will also serve five years on licence when he is released.
