Carryduff house fire: 91-year-old man dies

  • 9-2-2014

A 91-year-old man has died in a house fire in Carryduff, on the outskirts of Belfast.

Fire crews were called to a house off the Hillsborough Road just before 01:00 BST on Tuesday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but police have said they do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances.

It is understood the house directly behind where the blaze happened was also damaged.

BBC News NI reporter Rick Faragher said the house where the man lived was located in Thorndale Park, a cul-de-sac, just off the Hillsborough Road.

"Neighbours tell me he lived alone," he said.

'Large flames'

"One woman who lives two doors down from the property told me she heard multiple explosions, as many as five.

"She and the rest of the small street came out to see what was happening and saw what she called large flames.

"The fire services were quickly at the scene. It took around 20 minutes to put the fire out."

He described the damage that had been caused.

"There's extensive damage to the garage, the wooden doors at the front and the back have been blown off it, but there's no major damage that I can see to the main structure of the house, certainly what ever these explosions were, the impact and the noise was clearly significant."
