Leyland school fire: Two boys sentenced for arson

  • 11-29-2014

Two boys have been sentenced for causing a fire which severely damaged a school in Leyland, Lancashire.

Parts of St Mary's Catholic Technology College were demolished after the blaze on 1 September last year.

One of the boys, who is 16, was given an 18-month detention and training order. The other, who is 14, received a two-year youth rehabilitation order.

The blaze caused £15m damage and closed the school for a month.

The youths, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had pleaded guilty to arson at Preston Crown Court last month.

At its height, about 125 firefighters tackled the fire, which the college said caused "devastating damage" to the buildings, with two out of three of them destroyed.

Fire chiefs said the fire had spread rapidly in a 1950s part of the complex due to foam roofing materials with no sprinkler system.

Pupils were taught at the site of Ribbleton Hall High in Preston while work was carried out.

The school said it was aiming for new buildings to be open by next September.
