Blackbird Leys house fire: Man guilty of 'revenge' arson attack

  • 5-30-2015

A man has been found guilty of deliberately starting a fire at a house in Oxford that led to five people jumping from a first-floor window.

Martin Nganga, 46, poured petrol into the hallway of the house on Mallard Close, in Blackbird Leys, on January 29 last year, before setting it alight.

Oxford Crown Court heard he was seeking revenge on his best man whom he thought was having an affair with his wife.

The jury found him guilty of arson with intent to endanger life.

The attack, which prosecutors described as a "ferocious and a cowardly act", took place in the early hours of the morning.

A 33-year-old man sustained a broken leg in the jump. All five people were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital for treatment.

The four other residents were two men, aged 27 and 48, and two women, aged 20 and 27.

The court was told Nganga's mobile phone and van were both tracked from his home in Tiverton, in Devon, to the scene of the fire.

Nganga will be sentenced on 31 July.
