Rape acquitted fire chief Sean Frayne to retire

A chief fire officer who was unanimously cleared of a rape charge earlier this year has accepted an offer to retire from his post.

Sean Frayne, of Fixby, Huddersfield, will be granted paid leave for the remaining months of his contract with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

In February, he was cleared of raping a woman at a Derbyshire pub in 2006 while his wife was in another room.

A jury took less than 15 minutes to find him not guilty.

In a statement, the brigade said Mr Frayne, 48, had been "offered the opportunity" to retire.

It added: "After careful consideration, Mr Frayne has agreed to accept this offer and would like to thank Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Authority for its support."

Mr Frayne was suspended from his post until further notice in March last year.

He was acquitted of rape at Derby Crown Court after telling jurors that a sexual encounter he had at a pub in 2006 had been entirely consensual.

During the trial, which lasted just over a week, Mr Frayne told the court he had been drinking in the pub with his wife on the night of the alleged attack in 2006.

He followed the woman into another room where they had consensual sex, he said. Afterwards, the woman told him "we shouldn't have done that" while his wife was in the building.

In 2013 he received two letters, in which he was called a rapist and was asked for an out-of-court settlement. He thought he was being blackmailed, the court heard.
