Foal doused in inflammable liquid and set on fire

  • 8-29-2015

A foal is slowly recovering after he was intentionally set on fire, leaving the six-year-old boy who owns him distraught.

Angus the foal was attacked in Pinxton, Derbyshire, while his owner Logan Appleby was on holiday with his family.

Kayleigh Appleby, Logan's mother, said he "cried his eyes out" when he came home and saw Angus's condition.

The family only adopted Angus a few weeks ago, after he was rescued from neglect.

Mrs Appleby said: "What kind of person would do something like this?

"It has shocked everybody. I'm having people coming up and saying 'Oh my goodness, is that your pony?'

"It really is inhuman. We can't get over it."

A neighbour was looking after Angus while the family were in Skegness for a few days.

Police believe inflammable liquid was poured on him and then set on fire.

It happened in a field off Alexander Terrace sometime between the evening of Monday 17 August and the morning of Wednesday 19 August.

His burns are healing but the attack has set back his recovery from the neglect he previously suffered.

"He went into shock and it made him drop all the little bit of weight he had put on since we had him," said Mrs Appleby.

"It's not just the wounds, it's the toll it's taking on his body.

"When he gets down he can't get up. He looks like he's absolutely paralytically drunk because his two back legs are so weak."

The family rescued two other foals at the same time as Angus, and Mrs Appleby said they were now "twice the size" of him.

She has considered having Angus euthanised.

"He's extremely weak and wobbly, but he's eating. That's the only thing that makes me stop from having him put down," she said.

"That's the only thing that I'm holding on to, that he's stuffing his face."
