M25 car transporter fire causes 'gridlock'

  • 9-27-2015

The M25 was shut for two hours because of a fire in a car transporter that caused severe morning rush-hour delays.

Traffic was affected in north London and Hertfordshire but the motorway had fully re-opened by midday.

The fire started at about 07:30 BST and affected the westbound carriageway between junction 25 at Enfield and junction 24 at Potters Bar.

The transporter was carrying 10 vehicles and remains on the hard shoulder but is due to be moved later.

London Fire Brigade said six fire engines and 30 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze which is now out.

Highways England said the anti-clockwise carriageway was closed for two hours earlier for necessary road repairs but the road had re-opened by noon, with the exception of a small coned off area immediately around the transporter.

The BBC understands the road will be closed briefly later in the evening or overnight to remove the transporter.
