Vintage radio station Angel Radio damaged in fire

  • 9-27-2015

A community radio station run by pensioners has gone off air after a fire broke out at its studios.

Fire broke out at Angel Radio's studios in Havant, Hampshire shortly after 07:00 BST.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue said three fire crews tackled the blaze in the ground floor premises.

The station confirmed its record library of over 136,000 vintage shellac recordings had suffered smoke and water damage.

It began broadcasting in 1999 specialising in pre-1960s music and is run by more than 70 volunteers, most of whom are over 60.

Station manager Tony Smith, who was the only member of staff in the premises at the time, said he was faced with a "pillar of fire from ceiling to floor" after a fluorescent light fitting burst into flames.

He said: "The whole of the inside of the building is soot-damaged, the studios are blackened and also water-damaged from the hoses. Unique 78rpm shellac records littered the floor smashed and warped."

The station's array of broadcasting awards have also been destroyed.

Hampshire Fire and rescue said firefighters used breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

Havant firefighters later tweeted: "Devastated to report that crews from @HavantFire16 attended a fire call at our good friends Angel Radio this morning"
