Gloucestershire fire crews get university fitness help

  • 11-27-2015

Gloucestershire's fire crews are getting fitness advice and support to help them cope with the physical demands of their jobs.

Earlier in the year, University of Gloucestershire started trials offering fitness and diet advice and rehab for sprains, strains and other injuries.

Now the fire service support scheme is to be rolled out across the county.

Sports director Dr Andy Pitchford said they were going to help them "get fit, stay fit and pass the tests they need".

Although crews use protective gear to prevent them from being burned, the physical demands of the job, such as heavy lifting, means the most common injuries tend to be muscular.

The rolled-out project will now see university students and staff visiting fire stations to give massage therapy, as well as general advice on diet and fitness.

Dr Pitchford added it was the "perfect partnership" where undergraduate and masters students could experience real-life scenarios and apply what they had learnt on their courses.

The long-term hope is to improve the accuracy and reliability of fitness tests for firefighters at Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue, and potentially to roll it out to other public agencies.
