Isle of Man's £557,000 fire training facility backed

  • 11-27-2015

Work on a new fire training facility in the Isle of Man will begin next week, the government has confirmed.

The £557,000 project was approved in Tynwald last week and will enable firefighters to undertake "essential training" without leaving the island.

Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson said it would offer crews the chance to train in "extreme heat, humidity, smoke and restricted visibility".

It is hoped the facility in Douglas will be ready by summer 2016.

The Manx government currently spends about £50,000 a year on off-island training.

Mr Watterson said the new facility would enhance "life-saving skills of Manx firefighters" and "reduce the need for Manx firefighters to attend courses at the UK Fire Service College in Gloucestershire".

It will be built near Richmond Hill in Douglas and feature a series of interconnected compartments.
