Fire at Stockton warehouse storing Syria aid 'suspicious'

  • 12-24-2015

A blaze at a charity warehouse storing donations set for Syria is being treated as suspicious.

The warehouse at Task Industrial Estate, Stockton, was being used by the group One Ummah, which was due to send aid to Syria on Wednesday.

Seven fire engines tackled the fire on Tuesday night, which the charity described as "saddening".

There was severe smoke damage and the recycled clothes were destroyed, Cleveland Fire and Rescue Service said.

Riszwan Rehman, from One Ummah, said clothes and tents had been destroyed and the fire had "thrown a spanner in the works".

"We usually have a really good response from the community and everyone really supports us, so it is a bit saddening," he said.

The charity also work on projects across the world and runs a soup kitchen in Middlesbrough to help the homeless.

Mr Rehman said there was about 30 tonnes of aid that was due to be shipped to Syria.

About 40% of the collected donations have been destroyed, however response from the public to offer support has been "huge", he said.

Cleveland Police said they are in the early stages of an investigation.
