One dead following former Lincoln Co-Op fire

  • 12-24-2015

One person has died in a fire on the site of a former Co-op supermarket building in Lincolnshire.

The blaze broke out at the property, which has a flat above, in De Wint Avenue, Lincoln, just before 16:30 GMT on Monday.

Lincolnshire Police said the identity of the deceased is still unknown.

Two others were taken to hospital but were not seriously injured. Police said an investigation has begun into how the fire started.

The ground floor of this property, a former Co-op store and lately a shop selling magic tricks, is now little more than a blackened shell.

But it is considerably quieter here than last night, when a number of firefighters were on the scene.

The incident was quickly escalated, and support came from seven stations including from Market Rasen.

Dave Gilbert, incident commander for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said 50 firefighters were at the scene at its height.

He said crews are still in attendance trying to make the premises safe.

Road closures are in place and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
